Solar Decathlon 2013

Solar Decathlon banner_teams#2 Son Mike, is currently in Irvine California, at the 2013 Solar Decathlon, the final stage of several years of dreams and hard work.

He’s part of Team Ontario, one of 20 university groups who were chosen to compete in this year’s decathlon, a biennial event where the teams design and build a state of the art energy efficient home, entering a competition of 10 events which test the viability of the houses in categories such as architecture, engineering, energy balance, and marketability.

No doubt he’s having a blast showcasing their efforts and hanging out with like-minded young environmental engineers and I’m living vicariously through theĀ  Solar Decathlon website, where the ongoing standings of the teams are posted, along with pictures and news of the 10 day event.

Go Team Ontario!

On Your Deathbed

candlelightAt a dinner party recently, the host was telling us all about his aging mother and how, last spring, when she became very ill, the priest was called.

Sitting close beside the hospital bed, the priest asked her if she would like him to hear her confession. “Father”, she whispered,”I’ve done my best”.

This reminds me of a poem I read in one of the Louise Penny mysteries I was inhaling all summer. An excerpt from Margaret Atwood’s Up

You’re lying on your deathbed,
You have one hour to live.
Who it is, exactly, you have needed
all these years to forgive?
